Introduction
CustomFolder lets you customize your Windows folders with your own icons, colors and emblems. Instead of every folder looking the same, each one can have a unique color, template and decorative emblem so you can recognize and organize them at a glance.
You can choose from 5 built-in icon templates, pick any of 16.7 million colors, add up to 9 emblems per icon, and even use a JPG image or album art as the icon's wallpaper. Icons are stored locally so they work on any computer, even without CustomFolder installed.
The Folders Panel lets you apply the same design to many folders at once by dragging them in. For teams sharing folders in the cloud, Synchronized Folders keeps everyone's icons in sync automatically.
Main Screen
The main screen is divided into several areas. The toolbar buttons control what panel is visible, and the central area shows a live preview of the icon being designed.
Toolbar buttons (1–12):
- 1 Previous / Next icon template
- 2 Apply icon design to the working folder
- 3 Toggle personal icons panel
- 4 Toggle emblems panel
- 5 Toggle floating emblems panel
- 6 Toggle Folders Panel (multi-folder)
- 7 Cycle to the next color palette
- 8 Rotate icon (when available)
- 9 Reset to the default Windows icon
- 10 Homepage, check for updates, settings and user guide
- 11 Target folder
- 12 Apply next color scheme
Main areas (A–E):
- A Icon preview — drag the destination folder or a JPG image here
- B Primary and secondary color selectors with RGB input
- C Color wheel
- D Color palette
- E Favorite colors (up to 30 slots)
Select Icon
There are two ways to choose the icon: using one of the built-in templates, or picking from your personal icon collection.
Icon templates — use the Previous/Next buttons (or keys Z and X) to cycle through the 5 templates. The Metal, Paper and Classic templates support rotation (press V or use the rotate button).
Personal icons panel — open it with button 3. Drag any ICO or PNG file onto the panel to add it to your collection. Right-click an icon to remove it. Icons are sorted alphabetically; new ones appear at the end until CustomFolder is reopened.
Wallpaper icon — drag any JPG image onto the CustomFolder window to use it as the icon's background. For best results use a square image; non-square images will be cropped to fit. To replace the wallpaper, drag another image or switch back to a color template.
Music icon — when you drag a music folder that has a folder.jpg file inside, CustomFolder automatically loads that album cover as the icon wallpaper.
To delete the custom icon from a folder and restore the default Windows icon, click button 9 (Reset).
Select Color
CustomFolder works with a primary and a secondary color. A marker on the color selectors shows which one you are currently editing. Click either color or press Space to toggle between them.
The RGB panel lets you enter precise values (0–255) for each channel. The color will be applied to the currently selected primary or secondary slot.
Press C or click the palette icon to cycle through the 5 built-in color palettes. Below the palette you'll find up to 30 favorite color slots — roll the mouse wheel over a slot to save the current color to it. Right-click a slot to delete it.
Hold Shift to change the icon preview panel background.
Hold Alt to change the secondary color.
Double-click the background to cycle through preset colors.
Select Emblems
Emblems are decorative overlays added on top of the icon. You can place up to 9 emblems per icon, each in a different position.
Open the Emblems Panel with button 4. Select an emblem and a position, then click Apply. The panel shows all included emblems plus any you've added to your personal collection.
The Floating Emblems Panel (button 5) lets you place one emblem anywhere on the icon by clicking the exact position you want with the mouse.
To add emblems to your collection, drag a PNG file (85–160 pixels, ideally square) onto the emblems panel. Right-click any emblem to remove it from your collection.
Folders Panel
The Folders Panel lets you apply the same icon design to many folders at once. Open it with button 6.
Drag one or more folders onto the panel. Once your folders are listed, click the Apply button to apply the current design to all of them at once. The design shown in the main preview is used — so set up your icon first, then open the panel.
Use the Clear button to remove all folders from the list without applying any changes.
Skins
CustomFolder has 7 visual skins. Press the T key at any time to switch to the next skin.
The first skin lets you customize the window background color — use Ctrl + click on any color in the palette to change it.
Clone Icon
If you want to reuse the icon from a folder that was already customized with CustomFolder, you can clone it. Open the personal icons panel and drag the customized folder onto it — the icon will appear in your collection and can be used immediately for a new design.
In the personal icons panel there is a button that opens the folder where all previously created icons are stored. You can drag any of them back onto the panel to reuse them in a new design.
Synchronized Folders
When folders are shared through the cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.), changing an icon locally does not update it for other users. Synchronized Folders solves this: any icon change you make will automatically propagate to everyone sharing the same folder.
Open the Synchronized Folders window from the right-click menu on the CustomFolder window. Drag the folders you want to keep in sync into the window.
CustomFolder will monitor those folders while it is running. When a synchronized folder is updated by another user, you will receive a notification.
Settings
Open the Settings panel with button 10 (the gear icon in the toolbar).
Portable mode stores all configuration and icons alongside the executable, making CustomFolder fully self-contained. This means you can run it from a USB drive on any computer and your custom folder icons will stay intact even if CustomFolder is not installed on that machine.
The Context menu option controls whether CustomFolder appears when you right-click a folder in Explorer. You can also trigger it by holding Shift while right-clicking, even without it in the default context menu.
To uninstall the portable version cleanly, run Uninstall CustomFolderPortable.bat or run CustomFolder.exe -u before deleting the folder — otherwise the context menu entry will remain in Explorer and no longer work.
